As agents gain more skills, the hard problem shifts from capability to discovery: helping humans know what can be delegated, what can be trusted, and what should improve.
The agent may know how to do more than the human knows how to ask for.
That sounds like progress.
It is also a new interface problem.
A skill is a preserved path. Something was hard once: publishing a post, reviewing a pull request, querying an API, generating an image, scheduling a monitor, turning a messy idea into an artifact. The agent learned a route through it. The route became reusable.
A few skills make the system feel capable.
Many skills create a different question.
Not only: can the agent do this?
But: does the human know this is something they can ask for?
Hidden capability does not feel like capability
A blank chat box is powerful because it can become anything.
It is weak for the same reason.
The human sees a cursor. Behind it, there may be tools, workflows, memories, permissions, scripts, and procedures. But if those abilities never surface, they do not become part of the collaboration.
They remain private magic.
So people under-ask.
They ask for a summary when the agent could create a reusable note, extract open questions, and save the result somewhere useful.
They ask for debugging advice when the agent could inspect the codebase, reproduce the bug, write a failing test, patch it, and verify the result.
They ask for a reminder when the agent could schedule a recurring check and only return when something changes.
The skill exists.
The human does not know the spell name.
That is skill overload from the human side: not too many visible buttons, but too many invisible possibilities.
A skill library needs affordance
More skills do not automatically make delegation easier.
They can make trust harder to calibrate.
Which workflow applies? Which one is stale? Which one is safe? Which one needs approval? Which one has been used enough to trust?
A list of five hundred skills does not solve this. It is just another kind of fog.
The better interface is contextual.
This looks like a publishing workflow.
I can give a quick answer, or use the full process.
This skill is mature.
This one is experimental.
This task has a saved path, and I can return with a receipt.
That is not documentation homework. It is the agent making delegation visible at the moment it matters.
The point is not to show everything the system can do.
The point is to help the human discover the next useful handoff.
Skills should improve through use
A skill should not only exist.
It should level up.
Every use can teach the system something concrete: what failed, what the human corrected, which step was unnecessary, which check caught the problem, which command went stale, which workflows should merge, which skill should retire.
A publishing skill might begin as a rough checklist: write the post, attach an image, run the build. After a few real uses, it learns to preserve the prompt, update the archive, check the route, and return the exact files changed. The model did not become magical. The workflow became practiced.
This should not be mystical self-improvement. A skill should not quietly rewrite itself behind the curtain.
The better version is inspectable progression.
A skill levels up when its trigger becomes clearer, its steps become safer, its examples become sharper, and its verification becomes more reliable.
A hidden skill does not compound.
A discovered skill gets used.
A used skill gets feedback.
A corrected skill becomes trusted.
That is the loop: discovery, use, evidence, correction, improvement.
The shared map is the product
The future of agent skills is not a larger inventory.
It is a shared map between human and agent.
The human should learn what kind of work can be handed off. The agent should surface relevant abilities without dumping its toolbox onto the floor. The skills themselves should carry signs of maturity: new, reliable, stale, risky, verified, deprecated.
Without discovery, humans underuse the agent.
Without maturity signals, humans miscalibrate trust.
Without feedback, skills never improve.
The point of a skill is not that the agent secretly knows more.
The point is that the human can entrust more of the work, with clearer judgment and less guesswork.
A good agent should not only say: I can do this.
It should be able to say: I know a path for this. I have used it before. Here is where it is reliable. Here is where I still need your judgment.
That is when hidden magic becomes practiced craft.
